c.814 BC-c.146 BC Since Phoenician colonists founded Carthage in Northern Africa, it has become a vast economic power throughout the Mediterranean. Its wealth and influence knew no bounds as political leaders skillfully managed the burgeoning superpower. Now, however, the rise of the Roman Republic has presented Carthage with a new dilemma: the Roman sphere of influence is growing increasingly larger and Carthage's mighty Navy is no longer unchallenged. Carthage acts quickly to secure its interests in Hispania and the islands of the western Mediterranean. Knowing that their maritime technology is subservient compared to that of Carthage, the Romans keenly replicate captured Carthaginian warships in preparation for the inevitable bloodbath. The ill-defended islands of Sicily, Corsica, and Sardinia brace themselves for the conflict between the two behemoths. Now a newly designed Roman fleet is advancing on the strategically important island of Sicily. The Punic Wars have begun!
