c.338 BC-c.197 BC The Greek City State of Thebes had been embroiled in a disastrous and ineffectual war with their neighbor Phocis for many years. Bankrupt and exhausted, the Thebans appealed to King Philip II of Macedon for help. Dreaming of becoming the leader of all of Greece and re-conquering the Persian gains in Asia, Philip saw this as his one opportunity to realize his ambitions. His effective campaign against the Phocians brought him great recognition and a steady increase in power. After securing the major gold mines controlled by the Athenian colony of Amphipolis, Philip had the finances and political power to subdue the rest of Greece. In a desperate attempt to curb Philip's thriving power, Athens and Thebes formed an alliance to resist Macedonian encroachment. Philip acted quickly, and destroyed the combined allied forces at the battle of Chaeronea, effectively ending any future opposition. Now Philip was ready to invade Persian-held Asia and restore the Greek Kingdom to its former glory. However, in 336 Philip was assassinated in the middle of his daughter's wedding. The controversial assassination elevated his only son, Alexander the Great, to the throne. Alexander is determined to fulfill his father's dreams and defeat the Persian King Darius III. He immediately crosses the Hellespont into Persian-held Asia with an enormous Greek army. The vast and mighty Persian Empire is ready and determined to destroy this pompous Macedonian upstart.
