Battle of the Little Bighorn

The Battle of the Little Bighorn - which is also called Custer's Last Stand - was an armed engagement between the Lakota-Northern Cheyenne and the 7th Cavalry of the United States Army. It occurred June 26, 1876, near the Little Bighorn River in what is now Montana. The battle was the most famous battle in the Indian Wars and was a remarkable victory for the Indian Nations.

Forces from the Army led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, were sent to attack the thousands of Native Indians that had slipped away from their reservations to join forces with Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. The United States Army planned a three-pronged plan to corral them and force them back to the reservations.

Custer's main forces began their assault from an overlook 14 miles east of the Little Bighorn River. Major Marcus Reno was instructed to lead his battalion from the South and attack and pursue the Indians from the village and to bring them into the main battle.

To the surprise of Reno, the Lakota-Northern Cheyenne were present in force and not running away. Reno ordered a retreat to nearby woods, and then made a disorderly withdrawal to the river and up to the top of the bluffs and joined forces with a battalion commanded by Captain Frederick Benteen.

Having driven Reno's force into complete chaos, the Indian warriors were free to turn their attention on Custer. Benteen did not continue on towards Custer for at least an hour, despite hearing heavy gunfire from the north where General Custer on horseback and his U. S. Army troops made their last charge at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Custer's 210 men engaged the Lakota-Northern Cheyenne (or had been engaged by them) to the north and were killed to the very last man.
