The fall of several Colombian drug cartels in the mid nineties was a golden opportunity for small and emerging northern players to seize control of Mexico's drug trade. But no cartel had the muscle to step up, leaving a rash of new, ambitious syndicates holding only a small piece of the narco-pie. Rapid, cutthroat expansion was their preferred business model - from transportation to distribution, first within the America’s and then offshore. Mexico’s cartels were going global. The inevitable turf wars that followed were beyond Mexican authorities to contain - keeping up with the body count was a challenge, much less stopping it. Conflict resolution in the drug trade had evolved into civil war, no longer fought by cartel hit men 'sicario' but privately run military outfits, forces the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration described as more sophisticated and dangerous than any other organized criminal group in US history.
