In first half of 3rd century BC Carthage held many territories that made it easy for them to control and dominate the western Mediterranean Sea, but when they conquered the Greek city of Syracuse on the north eastern tip of Sicily in 264, they faced the Romans in war for the first time. The locals of Syracuce had requested Rome for aid, and for many different reasons Rome came to thier rescue. The fear of a powerful neighbour was only one out of several motivations by the Romans. The promise of glory and plunder was also of great importance. At this point in time, the world is split into several powers. By 300 BC Alexander the Great's Empire was divided among his generals: Antigonus, Seleucus, and Ptolemy. All believed that they were the rightful heirs to Alexander's Empire, and remained constantly at war. The hordes to the north have yet to be conqured by Rome. This is the state of the world, will Rome destroy Carthage, and dominate the world? Will Alexander's empire ever be united? Or will the Barbarians reign supreme?
