MARATHON
version 0.92
rated 3.8 (19 votes)
by Behemoth

It is 490 BC and King Darius 1st of Persia has finally crushed the rebellion against his empire. Now his gaze falls on Greece. For six long years this rabble has aided the usurpers and even now remains defiant. A show of power is in order he thinks, both to rid his court of lingering dissent and to ensure no Greek dares question Persia again. Darius dispatches his armies - their mission: to turn Greek cites to dust, to slay all who raise sword or shield against his will and to enslave the rest. This will be Darius's subjugation of Greece.

It is September and Darius's fleet land on a beach near the city of Marathon. If the army’s size wasn't cause for alarm the trail of destruction in its wake surely was, having already turned the Aegean Sea red and raised Eritrea. Athens, aided by a small force of Plataeans march to meet the invaders on the Plain of Marathon, blocking passages to Boatia and Athens. But the Persians are in no rush and the Athenian roadblock remains unchallenged. For days these 10,000 Greeks endure a stalemate, facing an enemy well over twice their number, an imbalance they hope the arrival of Spartans will help address. But that day never comes.

Grossly outnumbered, devoid of cavalry and possessing but a fraction of the enemy’s missile troops, inexplicably the Greeks decide to attack. The invaders are surprised to say the least, not only that a Greek offensive was ordered, but that as Persian bows fill the air the Athenians break into a sprint, a move no Greek army had used until that day. Surprise turns to horror as Athenian phalanxes tear into the Persian front line, and with the clamor of that maddened impact so begins the Battle of Marathon.

The Empire is divided into three continents according to one of the major land-grabs by three of Alexander's generals (the Diadochi). Battle of the Little Bighorn
version 1.1
rated 3.7 (107 votes)
by Bob McCartney (BarStar)

The Battle of the Little Bighorn - which is also called Custer's Last Stand - was an armed engagement between the Lakota-Northern Cheyenne and the 7th Cavalry of the United States Army. It occurred June 26, 1876, near the Little Bighorn River in what is now Montana. The battle was the most famous battle in the Indian Wars and was a remarkable victory for the Indian Nations.

Forces from the Army led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, were sent to attack the thousands of Native Indians that had slipped away from their reservations to join forces with Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. The United States Army planned a three-pronged plan to corral them and force them back to the reservations.

Custer's main forces began their assault from an overlook 14 miles east of the Little Bighorn River. Major Marcus Reno was instructed to lead his battalion from the South and attack and pursue the Indians from the village and to bring them into the main battle.

To the surprise of Reno, the Lakota-Northern Cheyenne were present in force and not running away. Reno ordered a retreat to nearby woods, and then made a disorderly withdrawal to the river and up to the top of the bluffs and joined forces with a battalion commanded by Captain Frederick Benteen.

Having driven Reno's force into complete chaos, the Indian warriors were free to turn their attention on Custer. Benteen did not continue on towards Custer for at least an hour, despite hearing heavy gunfire from the north where General Custer on horseback and his U. S. Army troops made their last charge at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Custer's 210 men engaged the Lakota-Northern Cheyenne (or had been engaged by them) to the north and were killed to the very last man.

First Macedonian Wars
version 2.3
rated 3.7 (105 votes)
by Lebowski

First Macedonian War (211-205 BC)

Concocted by both the greed of of the war-profiteering Roman Magistrates and the mounting desire to retaliate for Philip of Macedonia's alliance with Hannibal, the Macedonian Wars were the first of a series of unpopular campaigns started with the intention of staving off Hannibal and his forces from the boarders of Rome.

The Romans were clearly not interested in aquiring any permanant property, but were in desperate need of allies to do their biddings. In 211 BC the Romans formed an alliance with the Aetolians, old enemies of Philip's. In 209 BC Rome was joined by Attalus of Pergamum in their effort to destroy Philip, great-grandfather of Alexander the Great.

In 207 Philip invaded Aetolia, but the Romans did little to help. Were the gods looking favorably upon Philip finally? Would Rome prove too powerful for Philip while holding all the strings over their league of puppet forces? Perhaps you should decide the matter...

Inverse World
version 1.1
rated 3.7 (96 votes)
by RandomGuy

The year 2107. After decades of drilling, mining and wholesale harvesting of the Earth's natural resources, a giant void has formed under the Earth's surface. Without warning, a giant earthquake shakes the planet and the seven continents collapse upon themselves leaving giant craters in their wake. Water from all the oceans flow rapidly into the newly formed crevices, destroying all in their path. The seismic eruptions cause mountain ranges to forcefully rise up from the previous ocean depths. Everything that had been covered by water is now dry land - everything that was land, is now underwater.

Far away on the Mars colony, the space colonists from Earth see the violent upheaval and race back to their home planet. They land to find the inverse world. The former island nations are staking claim to large claims of land, while the previous land powers are relegated to small islands. New governments are formed. New continents are declared: The South Pacific Kingdom, North Pacific Territory, North Atlantic States, South Atlantic Kingdom, Indian Kingdom, Tasmania, Philippine Kingdom, Arctic Land, Mediterranean Kingdom and the Siberian Kingdom. Capital cities spring up where former island nations thrived. But peace is fleeting - this new age land rush has sprouted into a full fledged world war.

Which nation will rule the Inverse World?

by Enokrad

A young man from Macedonia, having taken control of the union of Greek city states 5 years earlier, marched in the year 330BC to spread the boarders of the Hellenic Empire and defeat, their century old rival, the Persian Empire. Before his death at the age of 33, on June 10 of the year 323 BC, he had marched victoriously through most of the known world at the time. Asides crushing the Persian Empire, his conquests included Anatolia, Syria, Phoenicia, Judea, Gaza, Egypt, Bactria and Mesopotamia, and had extended the boundaries of his own empire as far as Punjab, India. This young man, Alexander III of Macedon, was the first king ever to be called the Great.

Do you have what it takes rival Alexander’s conquests?

Florida - Seminole Wars

by Mark Bauer

The year is 1817, for decades the amalgamation of various Indian tribes and runaway slaves in Florida has been a tinderbox waiting to explode. Destructive and bloody raids by the dubbed “Seminole” Indians have taken their toll on American patience. Instigated by the British and supplied by the Spanish, the Seminoles are getting more daring and more vicious in their attacks. On November 30, a small band of Indians massacre 50 men, women and children aboard an American supply ship on the Apalachicola River. President Monroe sees this as an opportunity to finally cede Florida and eject the Spanish. He has ordered famed Indian fighter and hero of the Creek War, General Andrew Jackson, to invade and destroy the hostile Indians. The ruthless and brilliant Jackson has readied his ragtag group of Tennessee Volunteers and is poised to exact American revenge. The most prolonged conflict in American history is about to erupt! Will Jackson succeed and finally conquer the unconquerable Seminoles? Will the resilient and resourceful Seminoles endure? Or will the Spanish exploit them both and secure a strong foothold in Florida? You decide! The Seminole Wars have begun!

Bay of Pigs
version 1.2

by RandomGuy

Bay of Pigs Invasion
April 15 - April 19, 1961

In early 1961, a group of US-funded and supplied Cuban exiles returned to invade Cuba in an attempt to topple the communist government of Fidel Castro.

The invasion took place at the Bay of Pigs (Bahia de Cochinos) on the Southwestern coast of Cuba.

With the support of President Kennedy, the CIA, fresh off recent success in overthrowing governments in Iran and Guatemala felt confident they could take down Castro. They trained, funded and supplied over 1,500 Cuban exiles for the attack.

On the morning of April 15, the attack began with flights of B-26 Marauder and A-26 Invaders attacking airfields in the landing region. Soldiers parachuted in behind enemy lines to target strategic bridges, roads and defenses.

Meanwhile four 2,400 ton transport ships accompanied by CIA-owned landing crafts brought the ground troops. They landed at Playa Larga and Playa Giron. Unfortunately for the landing forces, what was identified as seaweed in satellite surveillance was in reality razor-sharp coral reefs, which slowed progress and sank several ships before reaching shore.

The revolutionary troops eventually landed and quickly forced back the defending Cuban militia. However once US involvement became public knowledge, air support abruptly ended. It also became apparent that Cuba had advance knowledge of the invasion and had effectively camouflaged their air force - their own planes scrambled to the skies to retaliate against the sea vessels and invading land forces.

The invading force got pinned down in the Zapata swamp by the resurging Cuban Army, and with lack of air support, they were quickly captured and defeated.

By April 21, 104 revolutionaries were dead, the rest captured. As many as 5,000 Cuban military were dead.

Now, you can recreate the invasion - Will the revolutionary forces stick to the plan and win? Or will the Cuban Army once again fend off the invaders?

Map Rules:
1) US Aircraft can only attack their designated parachute drop zones.
2) Cuban airports can attack US aircraft in addition to their neighboring countries.
3) Naval troops can only land at the marked beach coastline near Playa Larga and Playa Giron.

Map Scenario:
Player 1: Invading US-led Revolutionaries
Player 2: Cuban Army and Militia

Texas
version 1.0
rated 3.7 (76 votes)
by Evan Williams

This is a map of the present-day state of Texas, with 95 "counties" (simplified and redrawn from the 254 rather grid-like counties of real Texas; gameplay is more important than accuracy) and 25 metropolitan areas. Full control of a metropolitan area is worth bonus points equal to the number of "counties" in it: this ranges from 1 to 6. Note that the eastern part of the map is more valuable than the west, being more urban.

Even with the reduced number of counties, the map is somewhat cluttered; you may wish to turn off "Show army graphics" in your preferences. Besides, any war fought over modern Texas would more likely be metaphorical--a war of culture, ideas, or market share--than physical.

Okinawa 1945
version 1.0
rated 3.7 (74 votes)
by Kartofile

The Battle of Okinawa (March-June 1945) was the last major battle of WWII and the largest sea-land-air battle in history. It took Allied forces three months to secure the 60-mile long island, during which 1/4 million people died in a hellish landscape of greasy mud and rotting corpses. Many historians believe it was this horrific battle that convinced US leaders to force Japan's surrender with a nuclear strike rather than invade its main islands.

The map includes a two-player starting scenario which simulates the situation shortly after the battle began: US forces have landed and established control over central Okinawa, isolating the Japanese at the northern and southern ends of the island. You take it from there.

In real life, US troops swept through the sparsely populated northern areas within a few weeks, but it took months of nightmarish fighting to capture the southern part of the island. Tragically, Japanese propaganda had convinced many islanders that the invading Americans would commit genocide and other atrocities; this deception led to many extreme acts of civilian resistance including mass suicides. Postwar US occupation of Okinawa lasted nearly three decades (until 1972) and even today this small island remains home to a large American military presence.

The map is best played at its full size (985 x 567) with army graphics turned off. Continents may be more easily defended than they appear, as each one has just four border territories.

If you can tell me how to make this map better, please post a note in the Map LAB forum. Thanks!

Antarctica
version 1.0
rated 3.7 (58 votes)
by Enokrad

In the not so long future, after decades of mindless consumption of the planets natural resources and polluting of the environment, most of the ice on the continent of Antarctica melted. The sea levels around the world rose and countless coastal cities flooded with water. The consequences were bigger than what most expected. Highly toxic elements entered the atmosphere, which started a chain reaction of toxic rain, destruction of plantations around the world, contamination of fresh and sea water and the rapid decline of marine life. In Antarctica the lands’ remaining frozen areas served as a natural shield from the ecological disaster. With large areas of frozen freshwater and wetlands ideal for farming people from around the globe, in a last effort to survive, traveled by any means to Antarctica. As more and more settlers arrived, open landmass became scarce. Not long after, new alliances were formed and battles ragged through the continent in an attempt to secure more land.

Your alliance has given you their full force of their military might in an attempt to conquer and bring peace to the continent. It’s now up to you to prove you have what it takes to succeed and ensure the survival of your brethren and all those who seek peace.
Be careful though, there are others that seek the same goal who will, in their desperation, do anything to achieve it. At the most southern point of the planet, at 90°S 0°W coordinates, navigation tools don’t work forming a dead zone to those why seek passage through it. Prevent crossing it to avoid having your armies lost in that barren wasteland.

Good Luck.

This map was generated off a mainframe computer, using randomized iterative programming.
Contains a pseudo-random number of pseudo-random-sized caverns in an underground setting.
Provides some fascinating opportunities for strategy.
Try playing with five other bots, all with different "personalities".
Any bot can be dangerous, but this is one of the few maps where "cluster" and "angry" can do very well.
Starting scenarios are intentionally very unbalanced, so challenge varies depending on which turn you play.

War of the Five Kings
version 1.1
rated 3.7 (54 votes)
by Baudolino

The War of the Five Kings has begun!

Lead one of the five great houses to victory and a permanent seat upon the coveted Iron Throne.

- House Stark of Winterfell
- House Tully of Riverrun
- Houses Baratheon and Lannister of Storm's End and Casterly Rock
- House Tyrel of Highgarden
- House Martell of Dorne

In addition to these houses you may have to contend with House Arryn of the Eyrie, the barbarians beyond the Wall, and the fearsome House Greyjoy of Pyke which holds an important sea route.

Most castles are surrounded by a "siege zone" with a negative point value. This is meant to simulate the cost of besieging a heavily defended castle.

Keep in mind that not only do you lose points by taking a siege zone, but your opponent technically gains points. So be sure to end a siege as quick as possible.

You may be tempted to allow a siege to remain unbroken; this can be an effective way of increasing your men per turn. But be warned, the enemy can use that siege zone to attack virtually every surrounding territory. You must judge if it is worth the risk.

This map is balanced for starting scenario play, I recommend using a 2,2,3,3,3,4,4,4 card progression and a 5% increase per turn. Higher percent increases can be used, I find the map works best when most of your points come from territories as opposed to cards.

by Sylocat

Originally conceived at a party where some guys put two Risk boards together to create a new challenge, and prodded for me to do it by a couple guys on the forums. The story is, somewhere between Alaska and Kamchatka there is hidden a mysterious portal to another world. Go through the portal and take over the other world too. The two worlds are identical in every way, so there's no unfamiliar ground. You won't find the portal every time, by which I mean that the Alaska-Kamchatka connection is still open on each individual map. Happy dimension-hopping!

Land of Oz

The Land of OZ

First introduced by L. Frank Baum in his book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Oz is divided into several countries all ruled by a central monarch, residing in the Emerald City in the center of the map. The areas are Munchkin Country (blue), Winkie Country (yellow), Quadling Country (red) and Gilliken Country (purple). Emerald City is, of course, green.

Several notable landmarks are worth bonus points - the castles of Glinda the good and the Wicked Witch. Scarecrow's tower, The Tin Woodman's house, Cowardly Lion's Den as well as Dorothy's house. Also, the Yellow Brick Road provides a bonus and a fast track to the Emerald City.

Battle for control of the Marvelous Land of Oz!

v1.4 provides a 6 player starting scenario (continent values rebalnced).

Hex Two. The Return Of The Hex. The Hex Strikes Back. Re-Hexed. Hex, Too. Hex Revisited. Etc, etc. And you thought the first Hex led to long, complex games...

Europe Large--The Northmen
version 1.1
rated 3.6 (96 votes)
by Daniel Myers

A new twist on Europe Large. This map is based on the year 700, as the Northmen begin their descent on Europe. In their sites are the wealthy monasteries of Ireland and Britain. The Russian plains are still an empty, wild area; their presence will be felt there as well. In the south, however, rich cultures flourish, as the cities of Constantinople and Rome are preeminent. The Franks are the power of the West, as the Visigoth empire of Spain has declined. In the far south, a new threat is on the horizon: the Moslems. Will the barbarians destroy the civilized nations, or will the economic might of the Italians and Byzantines gain the victory?

Version 1.1: I have balanced the scenario to make everyone have a fairly equal chance at victory. The game is hardest when the Barbarians and Northmen are Yakool, and the other 4 are Evil Pixie. I do that by turning off random turn order; the first in the list will be the Barbarians, and the last the Northmen. I also added an overground to the theme.

This map is freakin huge. Only a truly chaotic Lux-er would even attempt such a map.
