My New Board Game

Post by Milltycoon » Wed Oct 30, 2013 12:03 am

Hello, all. I have invented a new board game, and I'd like to try to beta test it with a few people. It has never been (exactly) transferred to online yet, but it can be played with a spreadsheet, a couple of random name/dice generators, the "honor system" (since there is no efficient way for me to detect whether people are receiving the cards or dice they say they are), and a lot of patience.

I'd like to try to get a game in over the next few days if anyone is interested. It might require voice chat and the ability to view Excel spreadsheets and keep a few windows open at a time. It might also require somewhat of a time/energy commitment, given the time to teach and get things moving smoothly. It has a lot of moving parts but only a few fairly basic rules.

Essentially, you are the settler of a town. You buy buildings, house citizens in them and try to protect them against hazards that can compromise the buildings, citizens or the rest of your assets. And while you so this, you make money and earn victory points.

Please let me know.

Sign me up! Sounds like it's based on Settlers of Catan?

Like Settlers of Catan, there are resources and buildings and victory points, but no, I'd say that it was a bit further from Settlers of Catan than Risk is to Stratego.

I'd like to get 3 or 4 people other than myself. It is a 2 to 6 player game, but the dynamics seem to work best with 4 or 5. I have never played a 6-player game, which means that a 6-player game of this has never been played, so I can't speak to that.

Nooless, could you play on a Saturday? Asking because of religious as well as time commitments.

UPDATE: No test today (Saturday, 11.2) or this weekend. I will get back to interested parties soon. Trying to best facilitate the infrastructure for an online game.

UPDATE: I have made great progress in uploading my game, piece by piece, into a module so that it will facilitate on-line play. I figure that I am maybe 6 to 8 hours from finishing this project (satisfactorily), so I could probably host a game tomorrow (Saturday, Nov 9th) or Sunday (Nov 10th) or on a weeknight next week, if anyone is available and interested. The game is 2 to 6 players, and so I'd like to try to get three people (making a game of 4) as a good sample size to test the module and the game. My future Sundays for a while do not look promising (after November 10th), but on most other days of the week, I can find time to arrange a game. Ideally, there would be more than 1 game of this, scheduled on different days (I should test it a number of times).

Thanks, everyone for bearing with me on this. Please give me your thoughts here in this thread or by PM.

UPDATE: I continue to make great strides designing the module for my game. I am down to just two or three pesky issues I cannot yet resolve. I anticipate that I might be finished with the module by the end of today. I would love to be able to schedule a game soon. The module is a free download.

UPDATE: I now only have one remaining issue before my module can be published. (It deals with adding cards to the decks depending on how many people are playing.) I should have this worked out soon, and then the module is ready to go. (Or at least ready to be tested for things I missed.) I'll continue to let you all know, and hopefully (as is always the last line of these updates) we can set up a game soon.

Thanks to Kude for spending a few minutes helping me gather data on Saturday.

UPDATE: SUCCESS!!!!! (probably) My module has been tested--too briefly to be all that comfortable with the test, but it cleared every hurdle that I asked for, and I have reasonable confidence that the programming is correct.

So my game is now a real thing in the world. Who is interested in learning and playing it? I have a couple of schedules--please PM me if you have times/days that might be available. It will probably take about 20 minutes to teach and a couple of hours to play.

Can you send the rules in advance so we can read them at our leisure and thus spend the time together jumping into the game?

I'm curious about the rules too, not sure if I have time to play, but if sending me a copy is easy enough that'd be cool.

The complete rules can be found (as a pdf) at http://www.docdroid.net/60tq/level-six-rules3.pdf.html.

An incomplete summary of the rules can be found at http://postimg.org/image/5re2v7wsp.

The module containing the game can be found at vassalengine.org, then to the Modules tab, then to Module: Level Six (under L). You will have to download Vassal 3.2.8 (a free download of about 5 MB), and then download Level Six (levelsix1.0.4.vmod, free and about 2.5 MB). There isn't much automation on the site, so you won't be able to play a solitaire game, but you can what the pieces look like.

Thanks for your continued interest.

As of right now, I will be online and ready to play on this Thursday the 21st at 5:00 PM PST. I will have read and have a general knowledge of the game play instructions.

LETS GAME!

Edited to add:

I went to the instruction link, I chose the PDF version (which eliminates any adds that were appearing), I set my printer to print the instruction with four pages per page (save paper yo!), and hard copied the manual. The text is a little small but I find paper is easier for me to navigate.

I have down loaded all requirements (PC) at work, and have surveyed the playing board, pieces etc., but I am only at page 9 of the manual. Never fear, I will be prepared.

Since most people will be downloading the Vassal app and the Level Six module for the first time, it doesn't make much sense as a meeting place for our hopeful game tonight. The same is true for Google Plus hangouts, since not everyone has an account. It seems best then for us to meet in Lux, and we'll take it from there. My usual non-intrusive meeting place is in the GES Periods room, since it is almost always empty. I will be in as many places at once as I can tonight (8:00 EST).

Wow....just wow

Only skimmed the rules so far; really looking forward to delving in deeper!

I doubt, however that I'll convince my non-fanatic err enthusiast of games to be able to keep track of forty pages of rules. If you want this to be a "commercial" game, it might work better in an electronic form where most of the mechanics can be handled under the hood so-to-speak.

Have you played it much yet? With all these various things going on simultaneously it could probably use SIGNIFICANT test-playing to ensure balance so the game doesn't devolve into everyone building casinos (for example) instead of anything else!

Kudos mill!

@Nooless: I am biased, but I don't think that the gameplay is all that complicated. As WhirlPlaid said upon playing it with me last night, there is a lot of think about. But most of the game consists of buying things and then rolling dice. And a lot of the 40 pages of rules are just information about the things you can buy, and information about the good or bad things that can happen as a result of rolling the dice. It would probably take a few games for people to get comfortable with one or more of the many possible strategies. No, it hasn't been played a lot, but there have been copious experiments and tests on my end--my research consists of over 100 pages worth of different scenarios under "average luck" and various levels of opponent aggressiveness. I think that the balance is probably pretty good, a belief that may change in the future.

BlackJesus: The game is played on a series of personalized "boards", and a public card bank and table (where some of the interactive cards are played). You can get a look at the pieces at VassalEngine.org, under the Module "Level Six" (LevelSix1.0.4.vmod, under L). You would have to download both Vassal and the module (a total of about 8 MB, both free). It might, however, be easiest for you and I to find a time to explain the module and the game. I am very much interested in whatever help, advice or resources you may be able to share with me.
