The Battle of Thermopylae
It is 480 BC when Persian armies descend on Greece. A comparatively minute force of Greeks march to meet the invaders at Thermopylae where the only passage into Greece narrows sharply. This choke point, known as The Hot Gates, is ideal terrain for the Greek’s phalanx formation, and for three days they use its advantage to repel the invaders.
Hopes are dashed though when a Greek traitor, Ephialtes, leads the Persians to ‘The Anopaia Path’, a tiny goat trail granting access to Greece around the gates.
The bulk of the resistance retreats, leaving only a handful of soldiers behind, chiefly Spartans - their King, Leonidas and his tiny regiment of career soldiers thought to number as little as 300. These men fight on, not for victory in battle, but that their defiance will send a message. Indeed, even as they are cut down word of the battle and the bravery at the Hot Gates spreads, and in this way at least, the battle was not lost.Created by Behemoth. Version 1.03 released August 19, 2012.
